I love beautiful Children's Books artwork and have been very much inspired by them lately. This project is based on the book
Ghosts in the House! by Kazuno Kohara. The entire book uses an orange and black color scheme, with a separate, semi-transparent material for the ghosts.
To imitate this look, Boo first drew out a picture of a house on black construction paper. Using an X-acto knife, I cut out the spaces around his pencil lines, until I end up with an outline of the house. This, Boo glued onto orange construction paper, along with other background elements he designed -- a tree, leaves, a cat, and an owl. To make the ghosts, he drew and cut out free form shapes from vellum and glued them on top of the house.
I think the project turned out rather well, and I love how you can see through the ghostly shapes.
Please join us next week for an early edition of the October art gallery, where you can see the completed version of this project, plus another children's book inspired-art!

We love looking at your blog! Is that a sewing cutting mat? And where can you get a knife like that?
Another great art project! I love the way this one turned out. This one might be a fun project for our house since my oldest could most likely do it independently.
Hi Patrick and Emily -- thanks for stopping by! You can get the cutting mat and knife at Michaels, Joann or your local craft store.
I just saw this book at our book fair. Showed it to the teachers so they could be inspired to create their own ghost pictures. Great book! Have you seen A House in the Night?

Hi Stephanie! Yes we have read A House In The Night. It's another beautiful book and there are plans for an art project in the near future. Stay tuned!
I just did this craft with my 5 & 7 yr old. They are so excited about their beautiful projects. Thank you, what a very clever idea. Since they are a little older I wanted to make it a little more independent so I cut black strips of paper. They used the thinner pieces for the outline of the house, thinker pieces for room line and then cut a strip into squares to make the window panes. Then they used a black marker for the leaves & cat. We saved our ghosts for tomorrow's project. Thanks again, it was a big hit
Love the cut paper house in black!! Very cool
what a lot of fun! we are going to have to try this!
